In the early 1980s, “Jumpin Joe” Turner established his legacy as one of the top basketball players to ever play in Bakersfield, while helping to build Foothill High School as a basketball power. In 2018, his son Edward “Squid” Turner is creating his own legacy as one of the top basketball talents in Bakersfield while also helping to rebuild Foothill into a basketball power once again.

After earning a medal with her sixth place finish at the CIF State Wrestling Tournament, East Bakersfield High School junior standout, Cynthia Pelayo, is focused and determined win it all this year. Currently 15-0, Pelayo is leaving her legacy on the Blade FAMILY.

Empowerment and inspiration filled the Golden Valley High School Performing Arts Center during the 2017 Kern High School District Girl’s Leadership Summit on October 6. With stories of struggle, determination and perseverance echoing through the walls, girls from all across the KHSD were able to take home the wisdom imparted onto them by the speakers.

From livestock to pedal tractors, and from confidence to leadership skills, agriculture programs across the Kern High School District have honed in on skill building which resulted in success at the Kern County Fair.
